Well this year took all of us for quite the ride and I think its safe to say that we could all use a fresh start. For me, 2020 was in fact the hardest, most challenging, and heart breaking year of my life, but despite everything, including the pandemic and losing my mom to breast cancer, I was able to make some lemonade out of lemons. I realized that I had formed some toxic habits in my life that weren’t filling me up but actually draining me. I lost sight of my true purpose and the person I wanted to be. I was stuck in a never ending cycle of frivolous distractions and a negative mindset. I knew something needed to change, what’s the definition of insanity again? So here it is! A few ways I cut ties with the bullsh*t!
1. Prep for Success
Wether its breaking up with old habits, losing those few extra quarantine pounds (me, speaking to me) or simply developing a better mind set, you must first have a plan. In the past I have set expectations that were unrealistic and quite honestly not what I really wanted at all. This of course, led to me falling into my old habits and back at square one, once again. One of my favorite things to do when I want it all right now and my thoughts seem to be all over the place and I just don’t know where to start is this; take some time, alone and write down anything and everything you want, no matter how big or small. Fill the page, front and back, if that’s what it takes, when you are finished look at your list, really look at it, and see what things really stick out to you. Write them down (a new list) those things that really spark your interest and start there.
2. Put Pen to Paper
Procrastination and I have a very long and dear relationship, we’ve spent countless days putting off doing the work only to throw it together last minute. In my experience, procrastinating has always been the result of poor planing And fear. I would see something I wanted, decide it would be to scary and to hard, and then put it off. My best advice, is to take that list of wants and turn it into a goal. Write it out, get specific on how you plan to achieve this goal. Once its laid out on paper, all of the fear or doubt surrounding your new goal will vanish.
3. Close Your Eyes and Visualize
Now that you have an idea for what you want and how your gonna get it, its time to look inward and focus. Take a few minutes every morning to visualize your goals. Walk yourself through your day and see it unfolding with ease. Welcome new challenges and other learning experiences. Breathe into your new reality.
Meditation is an amazing tool for all types of manifestation, including, reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. Mindfulness has shown to be a key tool in manifesting the things we want, by simply tuning out the world around you and connecting with your truest self.
4. Early Bird Gets the Worm
This is self explanatory, wake up a little earlier, give yourself time to warm up to the day ahead. Rushing, inevitably leads to mess ups, give yourself a chance to plan and show up prepared to the day. If its weight your working on, this process is key, planing your meals, getting in that am gym session before work, etc. I cant tell you how many times I’ve rushed out the door (late as usual) forgetting something I needed, not eating a proper meal, missing out on my morning cup joy, I mean joe, and setting the stage for the type of day I would inevitability have, a terrible one.
Get to bed a little sooner and wake up a little earlier, trust me it gets easier, and it is a
lifesaver in the end.
5. Small Victories
This one is for the days when you wake up feeling less than spectacular. The days when all you want is to stay in bed and hide under your covers. On days like this its so important to remember that were only human. It is okay to want to rest a little longer or move a little slower, so, when this happens, and it will, take it easy! Don’t worry that your not doing “enough”, it’s the small victories that add up to bigger successes. Try your best, and be kind to yourself.
6. Take Time to Enjoy the Process and Have Fun
And last, but certainly not least, enjoy the process! Chances are your goal is gonna take some time to achieve, most great things do, so might as well enjoy the process. For some of us, this process is one of the hardest, we spend up every last drop of energy until we burn ourselves out. Avoid all that by taking time to step back and appreciate how far you’ve come, make this process something you can look back on in awe at yourself. Above all else, believe in yourself and make it happen!
Wishing you all a wonderful and life changing New Year
